WordPress Words: Featured Image

A featured image represent the contents, mood, or theme of a post or page. Posts and pages can have a single featured image, which many themes and tools can use to enhance the presentation of your site.

With custom header images, you can display your own photo on your blog’s page headers. Featured images allow for even greater customization, giving you the option to display unique custom header images for specific posts and pages or set thumbnails for special features of your theme.

Example: A Featured Image is an image that is selected as the representative image for Post, Pages or Custom Posts.

About The Word

Featured images are used on some WordPress Themes to incorporate images into the site’s design. There are many ways this is done and the display and usage of featured images is set by the Theme. Read the Theme specifications and instructions for how to use it with your WordPress Theme.

Featured images are often displayed on the front page of the site above or next to the post title and post excerpt. Click the image or post title to access the image.

Some WordPress Themes use featured images along with a category called Featured or through the use of sticky posts to use featured images in sliders on the front page of the site. Others may use featured images to change the header image on a single post or Page pageview.

Social media sites, like Facebook, use images to highlight linked content. The usage of a featured image may be highlighted in social media posts depending upon how the WordPress Theme uses the featured images. If the featured image for the post is featured on the front page of the site and not the post itself, it will not appear in the social media stream. Only images on the post itself will appear. Check your Theme to see how this works.

To set the WordPress Featured Image feature on a WordPress site, edit a post. Look for Featured Image in the Post Edit Screen and click it to access the Media Manager to use an image already uploaded to the site or upload a new one.

WordPress Words: Attachment

Attachment – WordPress Codex

Why are Attachments Important

  1. Less Confusing for the User: Allowing the user to see an image more clearly, without navigating away from your site or clicking the back button to get back to your site.
  2. Direct Attachment to Posts and Pages: Simpler to change an image for a single post or page, or changing them all at once across your site, instead changing them individually.
  3. Branding: How you present yourself; is your site professional, establishing a personal confidence and trust in your product or service.

Types of Attachments

Attachments are images and files linked to the web page on WordPress.

There is a range of file types that can be uploaded into the Media Library they include image, video and audio files, but other file types such as document files or spreadsheet files can also be incorporated into your WordPress site. Continue reading WordPress Words: Attachment

Installing WordPress on Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services  (AWS) offer a way to host your own WordPress sight with no hardware and little to no expense on a small WP blog site. This is ideal if you want to start working with a self hosted WordPress site for developmental purposes, monetization of your blog, or just good ol’ bragging rights.

In this article I will go into an overview of the EC2 service and the various Virtual Machines (referred to as instances from here on out) that are free and paid. Some may be free to download and initially spin up but may incur an additional cost to the AWS price tier even if you are in the Free Tier. Even though I discuss the free tier exclusively and micro-instances it should be mentioned that the AWS allows for scalability of your WordPress site so it can grow as your site(s) grow.

Bitnami Logo for WP instance. There are various pre-made instances for use with your AWS account that are configured for just about “one touch” configuration. Some are free, others are free to upload to AWS but incur a usage cost, and others cost for upload and usage. A few of the providers are; Bitnami, JumpBox, and Turnkey Linux. If you do choose to go with these “one click” solutions be sure to read all the print to verify if there are any charges for the instance or use of and how the charges are calculated. Domain Name Services: Postman of the Internet

Domain Name Services (DNS) is a service which exist to help us humanize the addresses of networked resources. Humans remember words as a whole easier than numbers representing octal based Internet Protocol addresses of those same networked resources be them across the Wide World Web or just an arms length away on our local network.

That was a mouth full. Essentially through DNS you can type in a URL into your favorite web browser and through the process of name resolution your system contacts a server acting in your behalf to find the correct IP address that matches the human oriented address you type in.

Sounds simple but a lot of chatter between various servers near and far may happen just to pull up that favorite site that you wish to view. First your own system will see if it has the particular IP/URL pairing locally in it’s own tables. On your computer this information will be kept in a host.txt file and depending on the operating system the location varies. Continue reading Domain Name Services: Postman of the Internet

Tidio Gallery: How will you show off your photos?

Tidio Gallery is a WordPress Plugin that allows you to have a different Gallery then the stock one WordPress offers you. It opens over your page and allows you to scroll through all the photos with a limited UI on the bottom of the screen that only pops up in the beginning for a few seconds and then when you click the page.

It is a simple plugin if you are looking for something like the stock gallery but a little different.

  • Pros:
    • It’s full screen.
    • It’s minimal UI intensive
    • Unlike the stock Gallery view you are able to see the whole screen with no cut offs whether or not you have a “big enough” screen as seen below.

WordPress Gallery cuts off text

  • Cons:
    • Doesn’t offer an obvious way to get out of viewing the pictures
    • Similar to the updated Gallery view with Stock WordPress

What is a Gravatar?

The Gravatar service is a program that users around the world can use to create their own personal avatar that is recognized globally. Gravatar stands for “globally recognized avatar.”

People all around the world use these graphic icons to represent themselves and give a face to their email, social media, blogs, etc. In WordPress for example your Gravatar is located in the top right hand side of the Administration Panels where you develop your blog, and can also be found anywhere you comment on anyone else’s content on any WordPress site around the world.

The Gravatar system features two services. First, it allows the user to create a visual identity avatar. Second, it creates an online portfolio. If enabled on WordPress or other sites using Gravatars, a Gravatar profile hover card will appear when someone hovers over their Gravatar. Click the Gravatar and the user is taken to the online profile.

Gravatar allows the creator and webmaster to control certain content and ability to configure their system to set a Identicon if the user has no registered Gravatar. Continue reading What is a Gravatar?

Creating Clickable Images

There are many locations where clickable images are a valuable tool, such as front page images, icons, photo galleries, image information, etc. There are multiple ways of going about this process. I will be discussing how to add clickable images to your content posts and pages and also how to add them to your widgets.

Before I explain further, be sure that your image file is either your original image or is royalty and copyright free. Some copyrighted images can be used with proper citations depending on the owner’s specifications. There is also plenty of public domain photography available for your use. Also make sure that your image file has a distinct name like Purple Flowers, instead of a default title like IMG_2345, before uploading it into the media library.
