WordPress Words: HTML

HTML, or Hypertext Markup Language, is a markup language used to describe the semantic content of web pages. It is usually used with CSS and/or JavaScript. WordPress renders web pages to conform to the HTML5 standard. The standard is set by the World Wide Web Consortium.

The term HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. This is the language that the browser understands in order to bring you the contents of you web page. According to the article “HTML- HyperText Markup Language” on Webopedia, “HTML defines the structure and layout of a Web document by using a variety of tags and attributes.”

HTML consists of tags that hold the design and structural elements of a web page such as the header, headings, lists, images, and content in general. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) hold the instructions to design the HTML architecture of a site, influencing colors, positioning, size, and design elements.

HTML in WordPress

HTML is the underlying architecture of a web page. In WordPress, HTML is found in WordPress Themes, holding the PHP and WordPress code to generate and display the web page.

HTML is generated when creating a post or Page in WordPress. The user has two choices when creating content in WordPress, using the Visual Editor that hides the HTML tags, or using the Text Editor that displays the HTML tags.

In the post or Page Edit Screen, there are two tabs above the content and toolbar area to the right labeled Visual and Text. The Visual Editor is where you can type in what it is you would like to say, and then WordPress does all the code for you automatically. The Text tab is the “behind the scenes” of what you’ve written in the visual editor. This will show you where all the tags that are surrounding your tags and giving them certain attributes.

HTML allows you to build a base structure of how you want your page to look. You can think of HTML as the bones of your website. However, without Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) you’re websites appeal may fall flat.  wrote an article for ClarkWP about what CSS is, and what it can do to give your site the extra push it deserves.

Installing WordPress on Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services  (AWS) offer a way to host your own WordPress sight with no hardware and little to no expense on a small WP blog site. This is ideal if you want to start working with a self hosted WordPress site for developmental purposes, monetization of your blog, or just good ol’ bragging rights.

In this article I will go into an overview of the EC2 service and the various Virtual Machines (referred to as instances from here on out) that are free and paid. Domain Name Services (DNS) is a service which exist to help us humanize the addresses of networked resources. Humans remember words as a whole easier than numbers representing octal based Internet Protocol addresses of those same networked resources be them across the Wide World Web or just an arms length away on our local network.

That was a mouth full. Essentially through DNS you can type in a URL into your favorite web browser and through the process of name resolution your system contacts a server acting in your behalf to find the correct IP address that matches the human oriented address you type in.

Sounds simple but a lot of chatter between various servers near and far may happen just to pull up that favorite site that you wish to view. First your own system will see if it has the particular IP/URL pairing locally in it’s own tables. How to Code POUR-ly

Web accessibility is huge; especially with such a large percentage of the world’s population being considered “disabled” it is important to make your website as accessible as possible. Lack of patience for a few extra lines of code is quite lazy, when the end result is so critical. Here’s a few tips on how to code POUR-ly and make your website accessible!

Let’s look at few things you can do specifically in the code of your site.

  1. Properly formed HTML links: All links and URLs should be wrapped in anchor tags and have a title.
  2. Proper Image Formatting: All images should have an alternative text for screen readers to describe the image. They should also have width and height parameters in the IMG HTML tag so that the page loads accordingly even if the image cannot be displayed.
  3. Emails are Mail-to Links: Your email addresses listed on your site should be mailto: hyperlinks, not just plain text.
  4. Proper Text Formatting: Bold text should be made so with the “strong” tag and italic text should be made so with the “em” tag. If you want text to be bold or italic but not be read different by screen readers you can use a “span” tag with the “text-decoration: bold” attribute as an example.

Difference Between Visual and Text Editor

There is a huge difference between the two editors in WordPress. If you are determined to be a serious blogger working with WordPress, you need to understand how both work, why you should use one over the other and when.

In general, if you are a novice blogger, then stick to the Visual Editor. If you wish to be a speed blogger or professional blogger and web publisher, then get comfortable with the Text (HTML) Editor – both editors in fact – because you will be able to publish at high speed. How to Add Posts and Pages in WordPress

So you’ve logged in to WordPress and created a blog. Great! You won’t get very far until your blog has some content, though. In this article, we’ll let you know the various ways you can add content to your site.

Note: There are two basic types of published content on a WordPress site: posts and Pages. If you don’t know the difference, check out “Differences Between Pages and Posts on WordPress” to explain it.

Once you’ve logged in to WordPress, look at the top bar on the site. You should see your gravatar on the far right. Slide your eyes to the left a bit…aha! “New Post” lurks there.

Do you think that might mean…? It means exactly what you think it means.

Click on New Post.

On the web page that pops up, start your new post with a title and the text. Don’t forget to put the post in a category and add some tags.

How to Link to a Post, Page, Category, Tag, and Author in WordPress

Linking in WordPress can be an intimidating task at first, but this post will guide you through the steps and show you just how easy it can be. This post will also cover several different types of links, and the legal guidelines that must be followed when making these links. Soon you will be creating professional looking links that are neatly embedded in your own site.

The first thing you need to do is decide what it is that you want to link to. The methods are the same whether you are linking inside of a post or a page, but you must determine what you are linking to before creating that link.

Once you determine what you are linking to, there are a number of ways you can get the link information needed. The first is the most obvious, it is the address bar. You can just copy the information right from the address bar as shown below.
